Solving the Bulging Phenomenon in Gabion Structures
Gabion walls are globally recognized for their permeability, flexibility, and ecological integration. However, improper installation often leads to structural deformation. As an expert-level supplier, we address the core technical pain points to ensure your construction remains geometrically perfect and structurally sound.
Face Bulging (Deformation)
The most common issue in gabion retaining walls. Without proper internal tension, the hydrostatic pressure and the weight of the stone fill push the front face outward, compromising aesthetics and stability.
Uneven Settlement
When fill material is not layered correctly or internal bracing is ignored, voids form inside the basket. Over time, stones settle unevenly, pulling the wire mesh and causing the entire structure to tilt.
Mesh Bursting
Excessive tension concentrated on unsupported wire nodes can lead to wire snapping. Utilizing Stiffeners (Cross-ties) distributes the load evenly across the mesh panels.
The Ultimate Solution: Stiffeners & Lacing Installation
To maintain the rectangular shape of the gabion baskets during and after the filling process, the installation of internal bracing wires (stiffeners) is non-negotiable. Here is the technical protocol recommended by our engineering team.
1. The 300mm Layering Rule
Never fill a 1-meter high gabion basket in a single pour. The golden rule of gabion construction is to fill the stones in increments of 300mm (approx. 1 foot). After each 300mm layer is carefully packed (ensuring minimal voids), stiffeners must be installed before the next layer is added.
2. Stiffener (Cross-tie) Placement
Stiffeners are pre-formed wire braces or manually cut lacing wires used to connect the front face of the gabion to the rear face. For exposed architectural walls, diagonal corner stiffeners are also highly recommended.
- Standard Spacing: Install one stiffener every 300mm horizontally and vertically.
- Wire Gauge: The stiffening wire must be of equal or greater tensile strength than the lacing wire, typically 2.2mm or 2.7mm heavily galvanized wire.
- Attachment: Loop the wire around two adjacent mesh twists on the front panel, pull taut, and secure it to the corresponding twists on the back panel.
3. Continuous Lacing Technique
When joining adjacent gabion baskets, avoid simple spot-tying. Use a continuous lacing method: alternate between single and double loops every 100mm along the edges. Pull the lacing wire tight using pliers to create a monolithic structural block.
